Hello friends,
As I turn the page to August I reflect on all that has grown out of big ideas and big love for what I do, where I live and who I am. This week marks my 12th year of moving to Washington, a day doesn't pass that I am not amazed by the unmatched beauty, generosity of people and magical creatures of this state.

Over the years there have been many ups and downs, trials and tribulations, success and experiences in bringing my ideas (some a bit crazier than others) to life! I am grateful to share the abundance with those that have already supported me, and ready to greet those yet to join in whatever adventures come next.

Stay healthy, happy and keep your hands in the soil.
~ Lisa

Permaculture is the application of a set of ethics & principles to care for the whole Earth and all of its inhabitants. Originally from the term 'permanent agriculture,' now has expanded for applications to all landscape scales and other areas of life.

The three core tenants are the foundational ethics that guide each principle. Those ethics are
Earth Care ~ People Care ~ Fair Share

Principles may often be listed numerically in text for the sake of organization, however, in reality they are cyclical, can be applied in any order and are all linked to each together in a web. Start wherever you are!

Below is and introduction or a refresh of one of the 12 principles surrounding the core ethics.
To see previously shared principles check out The Bee's Knees post's here

 Integrate – Rather than Segregate

Placement of elements and structures in the right place increases resilience and functionality

  • Save space and time by mixing uses and functions
  • Group plants with similar water and sun requirements
  • Group elements with similar needs near each other (animals that need daily care, stacked wood or materials for projects with occasional access

“Many hands make light work”

This icon (with a little imagination) was created to represent a group of people from a bird’s-eye view, holding hands in a circle together. The proverb “many hands make light work” suggests that when we work together the job becomes easier

Moon Gardening

Since time immemorial our ancestors have lived, told time, fell in love, passed down stories and tended the gardens by the light of the moon. I would like to offer the opportunity to learn and engage with our only true and beloved satellite while digging in the soil and while walking other paths of our lives.

How does it work - different phases of the moon provide different energies for working in the garden (and all aspects of our lives) to support a specific task or goal.

This is related to but not exactly the same as planting by Astrological days. There is some overlap and you can do both concurrently or choose only one. In these posts I will focus on where the moon is in the sky and what energies that may bring you and your gardens.

The Moon, as you all know, directly affects our gravity and the tides. Did you realize it affects gravity on everything - all water on Earth; in our bodies and down to the water in single cells of plants and animals.

Where are we now?

Full Moon in Aquarius
Complete & Fulfill

When the moon is in Aquarius - we are called into the circle, together, away from private concerns. Reminders of the sacredness of collaboration and collectivity.
Under the hot Leo sun (fire element) our creativity, charisma and warmth are activated. This is a good time to connect, celebrate and share in the bounty of the greater whole.

How can this apply to the garden?

Share harvests with friends and neighbors, enjoying the long summer sunsets. Share your love of gardening as you hand over that extra zucchini or bouquet of wildflowers.

Moon Garden Plant(s) of the Month

Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) A pioneer species post-fire disturbance, and abundant in the late summer along roadsides and forest edges. Delicate and lovely pink-purple flowers blow in the breeze and are used for natural dyes. Edible raw shoots give  your kike a little sweet carb boost, or make tea from the leaves for a dose of Vitamin C.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is a lovely ally to plant, harvest or infuse when the sun or moon is in Leo as it is a ‘Lion-hearted’ herb. Recommend a tincture over tea due to the bitterness. Tea is optional in small amounts for intention setting - just don't make a lot.

Please join me in honoring the moon by accepting and celebrating what she has to offer. I look forward to learning more with all of you.
To regard this beautiful being in our solar system only as a resource, a trophy, a commodity to exploit for our benefit is beyond unfortunate and will only do us harm in the long run.

Moon Phases and their associations.

There are four primary phases, in some resources you may see as many as 9. Here I am introducing the most commonly seen. Please note this list of associations or attributes is not exhaustive, only a foundation to get us started on this journey together. Remember these apply to all aspects of life not just in the landscape.

New - Set New Intentions, Start Projects, Renew and Regenerate

First Quarter - Take Action, Increase Energy, Let things In

Full - Culmination, Complete and Fulfill

Last Quarter - Banishing, Let things Go

In addition to the phases there are periods of transition.

Waxing is the time between new & full; the first quarter

Waning is the time between full & new; the last quarter

The Bee's Knees - News You Can Use

~ Weeks Before Frost (yes, I said it)

It is hard to believe I am writing this, but now is the time to think about fall gardening and what we need to do before the first frost dates arrive. While we are still several weeks ahead of this important ‘deadline’ you should begin to prepare for the next steps.
Folks who have been following my tips, this may look familiar from a past December post to get you ready for spring. If you have not done this before we’ll walk you through getting your calendars and your seeds ready for a great season ahead!

~ Grab your calendar, and a few colored pens!
Look up your anticipated local spring late frost date and mark it on the calendar. Mine is October 26th
Now count back 2 weeks and mark that date, next (in a new color perhaps) count back 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks. Go to 10 or 12 if you wish!

Are you as shocked as I am to see we are only 12 weeks before first frost already (in my location)!!
If you have any seeds that are 10-12 weeks before frost check to see how many days until harvest and you just found your late season crop!!
For inspiration and more ideas about what you can plant this fall have a listen to this  episode of Joe Gardener - what to plant now (starts at 6 minutes)

~ If you use the Farmer’s Almanac link above, you may also notice how long your growing season is. Mine is 207 days 🙂
This can be helpful in planning your whole season. Add this somewhere in your calendar and garden journal.

~ If you still have seed packets round them all up for next month's TIP (and garden homework).
Download our seed inventory PDF
Keep those colored pens handy
