Hello friends,

Generally this is the time for resting and slowing down, but I have been just as busy as the last season. I apologize for getting this letter out to you all so late in the month so I will keep it short and sweet - feel free to download the Fall Garden Checklist below and work on it over the next several weeks.

As the leaves have begun to turn colors and fall to the ground I am recognizing I am a bit behind in my own slowing and turning inward to rest. These last few weeks have been particularly busy, but I am so grateful for the bounty it has brought. Now I am looking forward to taking my own advice and following the cycle of the garden and the Moon to begin to slow, rest and recuperate.

Take time to stop and look at the yellow, brown, red, and golden leaves up in the trees and scattered on the ground. Have you ever wondered what is going on inside the leaves and the trees at this time?

The short story is that leaf-dropping “deciduous” trees, shrubs or perennial plants are working hard to conserve their energy for the next growing season. Pulling sugars and carbohydrates out of their leaves down into their roots to store energy through fall and winter months. These leaves provide both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) functions. Fallen leaves begin as a protective layer against cold air and water, they slow the runoff of our soils we worked so hard to build over the year and provide homes for the beneficial insects and pollinators to emerge and keep the gardens healthy next spring.

The organic matter of leaves slowly decomposes, becoming smaller pieces of food then later macro and micro-nutrients the plants can access and take up through their roots to eventually build new leaves, flowers and fruits to continue the cycle.

So take this time to mimic Mother Nature and let go of any ‘leaves’ you no longer need and store energy for your next season of growth

Stay healthy, happy and keep your hands in the soil!!

Moon Gardening

Since time immemorial our ancestors have lived, told time, fell in love, passed down stories and tended the gardens by the light of the moon. I would like to offer the opportunity for you all to learn more and engage with our only true and beloved satellite while digging in the soil and while walking other paths of your lives.

How does it work - different phases of the moon provide different energies for working in the garden (and all aspects of our lives) to support a specific task or goal.

This is related to but not exactly the same as planting by Astrological days. There is some overlap and you can do both concurrently or choose only one. In these posts I will focus on Moon gardening, yet I will add tid-bits about which astrological sign we may be in at the time.

The Moon, as you all know, directly affects our gravity and the tides. Did you realize it affects gravity on everything - all water on Earth; in our bodies and down to the water in single cells of plants and animals.

Where are we now?

While the Sun enters Scorpio today the 23rd, and the New moon in Scorpio on the 25th is a time when depth of perception becomes the norm. It is a time to transform yourself (not just for Halloween and Samhain) and give yourself permission to wander into something new. Everyone becomes much more aware of the mysteries of life. We are sensitive to the dark spaces within our own souls, and more tuned in -  to deep connection with others around us.

~~ New Moon
- Set New Intentions, Start Projects, Renew and Regenerate ~~

It's possible you will have a difficult time deciding whether your feelings are 'correct.'  It pays to honor your feelings whatever they are; if you are feeling them, then of course they are valid.

Letting things move on becomes an act of letting things move through. Try not to look at things as ending - rather a passage, and an opening of space for new beginnings; be open to receiving new treasures. At this New Moon, take time for setting new intentions of new projects or new prospects aim to do this before Mars goes Retrograde on the 30th. That doesn't mean you have to bring your intentions to fruition by then - at least set them.

Mars is the ruler of power and success and may shadow big decisions in the arena of work or big business decisions so take time to really think things through.

How can this apply to the garden?
Transitioning from times of reflection to times of new intentions draws my attention to the permaculture principle of "Observe & Interact". I am observing what worked well and what did not work well and interacting with those elements to do things a little differently next season. For example a few garden beds and fruit trees that did not produce well need my attention earlier in the season, maybe a different approach to planting mixes and adding fresh compost.

Plants for the Moon Garden:

Marigold (Tagetes spp) There are more than 50 species of Marigolds . Enjoy these little pops of color for many months all around the gardens; consider them in your companion plantings to repel pests or herbal collection for teas or natural dyes. Seed collecting is very easy and fun & a great gift to share!

While you are learning more about the moon’s seasons, energy, power and spirit I ask that each of you also consider how you can help protect her - right now (and for some time really) there has been an assault on the moon. To regard this beautiful being in our solar system only as a resource, a thing to exploit for our benefit is beyond unfortunate and will only do us harm in the long run.

Please join me in honoring the moon by accepting and celebrating what she has to offer. I look forward to learning more with all of you.

Moon Phases and their associations.

There are four primary phases, in some resources you may see as many as 9. Here I am introducing the most commonly seen. Please note this list of associations or attributes is not exhaustive, only a foundation to get us started on this journey together. Remember these apply to all aspects of life not just in the landscape.

New - Set New Intentions, Start Projects, Renew and Regenerate

First Quarter - Take Action, Increase Energy, Let things In

Full - Culmination, Complete and Fulfill

Last Quarter - Banishing, Let things Go

In addition to the phases there are periods of transition.

Waxing is the time between new & full; the first quarter

Waning is the time between full & new; the last quarter

~ Leave the Leaves  ~ #leavetheleaves
10 Reasons to keep the leaves on the ground this fall!
  • Increase Soil Fertility aka fertilizer

  • Natural mulch to insulate the roots of trees and shrubs

  • Increase organic matter

  • Make compost for your veggie gardens

  • Decrease spring and summer weeds

  • Winter habitat for caterpillars and other insects

  • Forage for migratory and winter resident birds to eat the insects

  • Protection from winter rains, reducing runoff and flooding issues

  • Beautiful fall colors :)

  • FUN for Jumping in!!!

Harmful effects from removing the leaves

  • Byproducts of mechanical removal - gasoline pollution, auditory and respiratory damage, nerve damage from holding vibrating machinery and using repetitive movements for equipment operators

  • Damaged vegetation by raking over, or heavy blowing

  • Reduction of water retention leading to heavy runoff and flooding

  • Leaching of nutrients after each rain event

  • Removal of larvae and pupae of important insects and pollinators

~ Plant fall season or over wintering crops - try planting broccoli, fennel, arugula, beets! Remember to plant according to your zone and your season. Plant veggies you know you will actually eat (maybe try one new one as well)!
