Hello friends,

A quick note to say Happy Giving Thanks Day - my new take on Thanksgiving.

This time of year is busy with travel, shopping, cooking, decorating and more. Each taking focus away from being thankful to just BE together, as you are, without the long lines and shiny ribbons.

As many of us may be spending time with family and friends over the next several weeks I invite you to arrive fully present, with good intentions and no expectations on the outcome.

What do the holidays mean deep down to you?
How do you show appreciation and gratitude?
How do you receive appreciation and gratitude?
What traditions do you love?
Which one's do you follow but don't know why?

Take a little time this year to ask those you love what they are truly thankful for. You may learn most of the answers did not come in a box or with a gift receipt.

Stay healthy, happy and keep your hands in the soil!!

Moon Gardening

Since time immemorial our ancestors have lived, told time, fell in love, passed down stories and tended the gardens by the light of the moon. I would like to offer the opportunity for you all to learn more and engage with our only true and beloved satellite while digging in the soil and while walking other paths of your lives.

How does it work - different phases of the moon provide different energies for working in the garden (and all aspects of our lives) to support a specific task or goal.

This is related to but not exactly the same as planting by Astrological days. There is some overlap and you can do both concurrently or choose only one. In these posts I will focus on where the moon is in the sky and what energies that may bring you and your gardens.

The Moon, as you all know, directly affects our gravity and the tides. Did you realize it affects gravity on everything - all water on Earth; in our bodies and down to the water in single cells of plants and animals.

Where are we now?

Tonight is the New moon and we entered Sagittarius yesterday the 22nd.
Today Jupiter retrograde ends. If you noticed troubles with transportation or 'moving forward' in career or finances you may find relief in this new energy.
Sagittarius is depicted with an arrow - pointing ahead with focus and determination. This is a time of discovery, luck, abundance and expansion. Ruled by Jupiter we are reminded to first slow down and look carefully at our target and our decisions from all angles before letting go of the string of the bow.

What direction will your arrow take you?

~~ New Moon
- Set New Intentions, Start Projects, Renew and Regenerate ~~

How can this apply to the garden?
As with any new moon we at the start of a new cycle; the garden is no different. While it may be resting now - not actively growing, you are preparing the soil to grow something amazing very soon. Plant cover crops, or cover with mulch to feed the life that will feed your plants and eventually your belly! Begin dreaming of what you will plant (stay tuned for tips)

Plants for the Moon Garden:

Rosemary - Rosmarinus officinalis, more lore and uses than will fit on one page! Benefits include strengthening memory, protection from illness and infection and  as a cleanser. This shrub is beautiful, culinary, medicinal and a pollinator favorite yet repels pesky insects (yes insects are pollinators too).

While you are learning more about the moon’s seasons, energy, power and spirit I ask that each of you also consider how you can help protect her - right now (and for some time really) there has been an assault on the moon. To regard this beautiful being in our solar system only as a resource, a trophy, a commodity to exploit for our benefit is beyond unfortunate and will only do us harm in the long run.

Please join me in honoring the moon by accepting and celebrating what she has to offer. I look forward to learning more with all of you.

Moon Phases and their associations.

There are four primary phases, in some resources you may see as many as 9. Here I am introducing the most commonly seen. Please note this list of associations or attributes is not exhaustive, only a foundation to get us started on this journey together. Remember these apply to all aspects of life not just in the landscape.

New - Set New Intentions, Start Projects, Renew and Regenerate

First Quarter - Take Action, Increase Energy, Let things In

Full - Culmination, Complete and Fulfill

Last Quarter - Banishing, Let things Go

In addition to the phases there are periods of transition.

Waxing is the time between new & full; the first quarter

Waning is the time between full & new; the last quarter

~ Leave the Leaves  ~ #leavetheleaves
10 Reasons to keep the leaves on the ground this fall!
This garden task is important for so many reasons I must share it again this season. Many prefer a clean and tidy space - so a challenge is to find one small area to be a little wild. Your garden will thank you later!
** Removing leaves on walkways and stairs is always OKAY!
  • Increase Soil Fertility aka fertilizer

  • Natural mulch to insulate the roots of trees and shrubs

  • Increase organic matter

  • Make compost for your veggie gardens

  • Decrease spring and summer weeds

  • Winter habitat for caterpillars and other insects

  • Forage for migratory and winter resident birds to eat the insects

  • Protection from winter rains, reducing runoff and flooding issues

  • Beautiful fall colors :)

  • FUN for Jumping in!!!

Harmful effects from removing the leaves

  • Byproducts of mechanical removal - gasoline pollution, auditory and respiratory damage, nerve damage from holding vibrating machinery and using repetitive movements for equipment operators

  • Damaged vegetation by raking over, or heavy blowing

  • Reduction of water retention leading to heavy runoff and flooding

  • Leaching of nutrients after each rain event

  • Removal of larvae and pupae of important insects and pollinators

~ Insulate with mulch (not compost)

Cover over-wintering veggies such as carrots, potatoes, leeks with 4-6 inches of organic mulch (and leaves you saved earlier)!

~ Light to moderate pruning of shrubs and trees

Now that the leaves have fallen you can begin to cut back. Remember 20% of total size at a time. Focus on maintaining desired size, removing dead and damaged branches or those touching the ground.
