Hello friends,

Before I (and everyone around me) get too busy for the holiday season I try to spend some time reflecting on all that I am happy and grateful for. I recently heard someone on the radio say “happiness is a by-product of effort” and that has really resonated with me the last few days.

Approaching the season of giving and consuming we tend to lose sight of the resilience within that has brought us to this point in the year. Honor reciprocity and the bounty of the Earth that sustains us, and the grace of friends and loved ones who support us.

So often we humans are wondering why we can not always remain in a state of happiness. In reality to be in a constant state of elation is not possible or even what we truly need. If you are someone who finds yourself wondering ‘why am I not happy’ pause and ask yourself if you are living a meaningful life.

Does your day-to-day job, hobby, friendships, or community bring you a sense of meaning or purpose? Rather than the endorphin boost of just being happy 🙂

If so great - keep up the good work! If not, what is one thing you can do this month that feels meaningful? Keep in mind this may be something new or even uncomfortable!?! Remember the greatest work we can do is at our edges!

Bake something for a neighbor, just because. Go for a walk with an old or a new friend. Volunteer to walk a shelter dog. Pick up wind-blown garbage on your street. Anything that makes an impact on someone else's life! Now that is meaningful and just might make you feel happy in the process :)

In gratitude,
~ Lisa

Permaculture is the application of a set of ethics & principles to care for the whole Earth and all of its inhabitants. Originally from the term 'permanent agriculture,' now has expanded for applications to all landscape scales and other areas of life.

The three core tenants are the foundational ethics that guide each principle. Those ethics are

Principles may often be listed numerically in text for the sake of organization, however, in reality they are cyclical, can be applied in any order and are all linked to each together in a web. Start wherever you are!

Below is and introduction or a refresh of one of the 12 principles surrounding the core ethics.

Use Edges and Value the Marginal

Edges are generally the most productive and interesting elements in a system

How can marginal spaces or items be valued?
Can you increase the edges in your space?

“Don’t think you are on the right track just because it’s a well beaten path”

This icon of the sun coming over the horizon with a river in the foreground shows us a world composed of edges. The proverb “don’t think you are on the right track just because its a well-beaten path” reminds us that the most popular is not necessarily the best approach.

Moon Gardening

Since time immemorial our ancestors have lived, told time, fell in love, passed down stories and tended the gardens by the light of the moon. I would like to offer the opportunity to learn and engage with our only true and beloved satellite while digging in the soil and while walking other paths of our lives.

How does it work - different phases of the moon provide different energies for working in the garden (and all aspects of our lives) to support a specific task or goal.

This is related to but not exactly the same as planting by Astrological days. There is some overlap and you can do both concurrently or choose only one. In these posts I will focus on where the moon is in the sky and what energies that may bring you and your gardens.

The Moon, as you all know, directly affects our gravity and the tides. Did you realize it affects gravity on everything - all water on Earth; in our bodies and down to the water in single cells of plants and animals.

Where are we now?

Third Quarter/Half Moon/Last Quarter
Last quarter moon in Leo
This phase supports you in letting go 'of anything that no longer feels in alignment with your mission'. Letting go of something allows for room to pursue something else to fill your heart. Revisit any intentions you set three weeks ago at the new moon.

How can this apply to the garden?

Looking back at your intentions before jumping into something new (garden or otherwise) will allow you to make small adjustments along the way, rather than big, course altering maneuvers. Intended to sow fall seeds but didn't get to it? Don't throw in the towel, just mark it on the calendar for late winter to pick it back up on time.

Moon Garden Plant(s) of the Month

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) - These long lived perennials not only provide delicious summer fruits for us (and the birds and squirrels) but also provide many seasons of interest and structure in the garden. There are many species and varieties to choose from so select a few that fit your site and goals.

Yes, this is the same blueberry in the background of the borage last month. Still looking great!

Please join me in honoring the moon by accepting and celebrating what she has to offer. I look forward to learning more with all of you.
To regard this beautiful being in our solar system only as a resource, a trophy, a commodity to exploit for our benefit is beyond unfortunate and will only do us harm in the long run.

Moon Phases and their associations.

There are four primary phases, in some resources you may see as many as 9. Here I am introducing the most commonly seen. Please note this list of associations or attributes is not exhaustive, only a foundation to get us started on this journey together. Remember these apply to all aspects of life not just in the landscape.

New - Set New Intentions, Start Projects, Renew and Regenerate

First Quarter - Take Action, Increase Energy, Let things In

Full - Culmination, Complete and Fulfill

Last Quarter - Banishing, Let things Go

In addition to the phases there are periods of transition.

Waxing is the time between new & full; the first quarter

Waning is the time between full & new; the last quarter

~ Avoid fertilizing for the rest of the year. If you added mulch and compost (as recommended last month) your plants will have plenty to 'eat' for the winter. Remember most are dormant and not taking up many nutrients meaning all the excess runs into the waterways!
